Website Design Case Study: How We Built a Website to Match World-Class Work
High Grade Metal Polishers polish work for some of the most significant living sculptors and architectural designers in the world. Major contemporary sculpture installed in museums, hotels, galleries, and public spaces across the UK, Europe, the United States, and Asia. Their old website did not tell anyone any of this. This website design case study tells the story of how we rebuilt it.
A new website that finally matches the calibre of the work. Inbound enquiries from artists who had never previously worked with the business.
Who High Grade Metal Polishers Are
High Grade Metal Polishers is an East London specialist polishing business, founded in 2006. Andy and his team hand-polish metal pieces for artists, architects, designers, and metal fabricators across the UK and internationally. The team includes polishers who have been with the business since the start, with more than forty years of combined experience between them. They work in stainless steel, bronze, copper, brass and aluminium, and they handle pieces up to ten tonnes.
What makes the business distinctive is the calibre of work they take on. They are the polishers behind major contemporary sculpture installations in museums, hotels, public spaces and architectural projects around the world. The kind of work where good enough is not good enough.
The Problem: A World-Class Business Hidden Behind a 2008 Website
For all the prestige of the work, Andy was running a website that did the opposite of justice to it. The site was visually dated, blocky, and centred on a watermarked background. The tagline read “the name you can rely on”. The portfolio was a clunky picture-gallery link rather than an integrated, properly attributed showcase. There was no enquiry form on the homepage. There was a fax number in the footer.
Nothing about it told a visitor that this was the business polishing major contemporary sculpture for installation in museums and galleries across multiple continents.
The site was also doing nothing for the business commercially. It was not generating enquiries from new prospects. It was not ranking for the terms artists, architects, and fabricators were using to find specialist polishing. And it was not comfortable for Andy to send people to. A prospect arriving at the site would see what looked like a small local trade business, not the international specialist Andy actually was.
He had outgrown his website by about a decade. It was time to fix it.
What the Rebuild Involved
This was a full digital partnership, not a website project handed over and walked away from. We took on the whole job.
We refreshed the brand, including the HGMP monogram that now anchors the new site, and built a design language that puts the work front and centre. The new homepage opens with a full-bleed image of a sculpture being polished, not a tagline on a blue gradient. The three core service areas, sculpture and artwork, restoration, and architectural, are presented as clear, photo-led entry points. The whole design is built to feel like a portfolio first and a service site second, because that is what the business actually is.
We wrote the content for the new site from scratch. Every word, every section, every project description. The job was to translate the technical realities of specialist metal polishing into language that spoke to artists, architects, designers, and fabricators in the way they actually talk about their work.
The portfolio was the hardest piece. Andy's team has worked on pieces by some of the most photographed contemporary sculptors in the world, and showing that properly meant building a structured process to gather permissions from the artists, fabricators, and customers whose work and photography we wanted to feature. We worked with Andy on that permissions process, attributing each image correctly and crediting both the artist and the photographer where required. The result is a portfolio that names the work, the artist, the location, and the photographer, properly and consistently. That detail matters to the audience this site is talking to.
We set the site up for organic search from day one, with proper on-page SEO across every page, keyword targeting around the terms artists and architects actually use, and structured content that gives search engines a clear picture of what the business does. We trained Andy and his team on the CMS so they can update the portfolio as new projects complete, without having to come back to us for every small change.
The build is the most visible part of what we do for High Grade Metal Polishers, but it is not the whole picture. We continue to run their digital marketing and their social media marketing alongside maintaining the site. Adding new portfolio entries, refining the SEO over time, and building their presence in front of the architects, fabricators, and gallery teams who commission this kind of work. The website was the foundation. The marketing keeps it growing.
The Results That Matter
A business that does world-class work now has a website that matches it. Andy sends people to it with confidence. The aesthetic feedback from clients and visitors has been consistently positive. The website is no longer the embarrassing thing in the room when a new prospect lands on it. For a business at this level, that is the most important commercial outcome a rebuild can deliver.
The Relationship Today
We continue to work with Andy and the team. Ongoing digital marketing, social media, portfolio updates as new sculpture installations complete, and the kind of long-term relationship that makes the marketing better year on year. Each new installation is an opportunity to show what the business does. We are the team helping High Grade Metal Polishers show it.

frequently asked question?
How long does a full website rebuild take for a specialist trade business?
It depends on the scope. For High Grade Metal Polishers, the work included a brand refresh, design, build, full content writing from scratch, the permissions process for portfolio imagery, SEO setup, and CMS training. That is a significant project. Expect a few months end-to-end for something at that scope, longer if the portfolio is complex. We will give you a realistic timeline at the start, not a fictional one to win the work.
Do you handle the photography and permissions side as well as the build?
On this project we worked with Andy on the permissions process, identifying which images needed which permissions, helping him approach the artists and fabricators, and attributing every image correctly on the site. We did not shoot the photography ourselves. For most specialist businesses, the existing photography held by clients, artists, or fabricators is already there. Helping organise and credit it properly is the job.
Will the new website actually rank in search?
Yes, if it is built and optimised properly. We set up High Grade Metal Polishers for organic search from launch, with on-page SEO across every page, keyword targeting around the terms their actual buyers use, and structured content that gives search engines a clear picture of what the business does. We then continue to support ranking growth through our ongoing digital marketing.
Could you do the same for our business?
Probably, if you are running a business that does high-quality work and is not getting the visibility online that it deserves. The starting point is always a proper look at where you are today. Our free audit is the easiest first step. We will tell you honestly whether a full rebuild is the right thing for you to invest in, or whether something smaller will do the job.
